Barnes Captures Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Series Holiday Show At Rolling Wheels Race
Posted by chet on Saturday, July 05 @ 01:22:04 EDT (1 reads) |
|
Elbridge, NY – July 3, 2008 – By Joe Johnson, DIRTcar Racing NorthEast Series Correspondent
Tour traveler Don Barnes from Gasport , New York captured his first career Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Championship Series win at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park on Thursday evening. The race was the second in the 2008 Series.
Former Pro Stock Series champion Joey Ladouceur and Dick Parkhurst brought the 26-car field down to starter Matt Burdick’s green flag with Parkhurst grabbing the early lead. Afternoon showers left the track heavy and rough which would make passing difficult.
Ladouceur soon found out that the infield was still quite wet when Parkhurst crowded him on the front stretch as the pair battled for the lead. Ladouceur spun and collected a couple of cars and Parkhurst was sent to the rear of the field.
On the ensuing restart, Barnes inherited the lead with Billy Woodward Jr., Roch Aubin, Don Carlson and Bill Pascual rounding out the front-five. Barnes moved out to a good advantage while Carlson charged into second in his number 26. The Lebanon Valley regular soon began to put pressure on Barnes for the top spot but Steve Johnston brought out the second yellow flag of the race with a spin in turn four. Series points leader Louie Jackson ---by virtue of his opening day win at Can-Am--- headed pitside during the caution period and did not return, the victim of mechanical problems.
When racing resumed Barnes led Carlson, Woodward, Aubin and Pascual but quickly charging from the back was the 92.1 of Ladouceur as he moved back into ninth by lap four, then by lap seven was into sixth. Defending Mr. DIRTcar Champion Pete Stefanski was also on the move after problems in his heat forced him to start at the back and a quick trip to the pits put him back there yet again during the race.
The top two began to pull away with Carlson all over the Barnes’ no. 28 machine but was unable to find a way by. Fonda Speedway regular Dean Charbonneau brought out the yellow on lap nine after contact with Woodward in the 49. Charbonneau tried to keep going to negate the yellow but got stuck in the mud, and the no. 49 car was subsequently put to the rear of the field where he was none too happy.
On the restart Pascual made a move for third while Ladouceur sped into fifth with the no. 2 of Stefanski not far behind. Hogansburg’s Ricky Thompson brought out the yellow on lap 11 after spinning and making contact with the inside wall in turn four and his no. 37 mountwas towed to the infield, done for the evening.
Ladouceur continued his charge to the front on the restart moving into fourth, while Stefanski jumped into seventh at the same instance. The top-three ran right together for several laps until Woodward spun the 49 on the outside of turn two on lap 17.
Following the restart, a wild battle ensued between the 92.1 of Ladouceur, Stefanski in the 2 and the 73 of PJ Peters, with the three Pro Stock veterans trading fourth, fifth and sixth several times a lap. Eventually Stefanski prevailed and set sail after Pascual for third. He reached Pascual on lap 23 and hit him hard in turn three to get the spot.
Charbonneau brought out one more yellow on lap 24 setting up a one lap dash to the finish. Barnes held off Carlson for the win with Stefanski, Pascual and Peters rounding out the top-five. Ladouceur settled for sixth but put on a great show.

The Pro Stocks will also see the return of the ever popular Super DIRTcar Series Trail event. In a yet to be announced date, Genesee Hot Shoes Pete Stefanski and Don Barnes will do battle with North Country Invaders Louie Jackson and Allen Peters. Genesee officials are working on a mid summer date that should be coming out soon.
In a popular move, DIRTcar officials decided to freeze the Pro Stock rules for 2008. The only change will be with the Holley 4777 HP carburetor, to remain consistent with all of the other DIRTcar classes. “With car counts a concern at all tracks, freezing the rules in the Pro Stocks seemed to be the best option available for DIRTcar” commented Genesee Promoter Mike Lauterborn. “Our Pro Stock car counts were going up at the end of 2007, and we now have some momentum for the 2008 season”.

Middletown, NY — October 21, 2007 – By Tom Skibinski, DIRTcar Racing NorthEast PR Director
The Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Series returned to Orange County Fair Speedway and it was Eric Marin taking advantage of home turf to capture his first career tour triumph to close out the full-fender portion of the 46th Annual Eastern States Weekend on Sunday afternoon.
Sixth-place starter Marin survived a half-dozen yellow flags to grab the lead on lap 10 and pulled away from Rob Rowe for six car-length lead to take top honors in the Leader Carpet Pro Stock Championship. Series standout Louie Jackson finished third ahead of early race leaders Robbie Speed and Mike Dutka.
Pete Stefanski was involved in a pair of mishaps during the early stages yet a 26th-place tally on the final scoresheet was good enough to claim a second straight overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock title.

Carlson Captures BNC Motorsports SDW Pro Stock Championship
Syracuse, NY - October 7, 2007 – By Dave Medler, DIRTcar NorthEast Series Reporter
Don Carlson battled current Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Series points leader Pete Stefanski then held off a late race challenge from Eric Marin to win the headline BNC Motorsports 25 Championship for Pro Stocks on Sunday at the "Moody Mile" as part of Super DIRT Week XXXVI.
"I wasn’t worried about only the 2 car (Stefanski), I was aware of everyone around me, said Carlson, after scoring his first-ever Pro Stock Series win. “There were some good cars out there today."
At the start of the BNC 25 Super DIRT Week Championship, pole-sitter Stefanski got the jump on the 36-car starting field into turn one and opened up a 15-car length advantage over the rest of the field. As soon as Stefanski opened the big lead the first yellow flew on the initial circuit for the slowing car of Jay Corbin in turns three and four.
On the restart, sixth-place starting Kenny Martin got the jump and moved into the runner-up slot. With Martin in second, Stefanski wasn’t able to build up the lead he had on the original start as Martin stayed right with the series points leader.
Just when the race was starting to set a solid pace the caution came out again on lap four, this time for Kevin Arnold who made hard contact with the wall on the back straightaway and his mount was taken pitside. The yellow came out again on the next lap as Dave Teidman appeared to have something break and launched his no.115 hard into the outside turn four wall. Teidman’s car was heavily damaged and done for the day.
Once the race resumed Stefanski continued to lead, still being chased by Martin and Carlson. Tom Kuck and Eric Marin were now starting to make their presence known, running fourth and fifth in a tight pack up front. Canadian challenger Gilles Godard got turned around in turn two and couldn’t slow down in time before hitting the outside wall on lap seven to force another slowdown.
Martin was staying with Stefanski yet making no progress getting by the leader and swung his car to the high side out of turn four in what turned out to be his final attempt. He was hoping to gain enough speed to out-race the leader into turn one but it didn’t work as Martin got freight-trained on the bottom and shuffled back to eighth allowing Stefanski to once again open up a comfortable margin on the field.
With Stefasnski out front, all eyes turned to the intense battle for second between Lebanon Valley Speedway runner Carlson and Orange County Fair Speedway regular Marin as the pair battled nose-to-tail and side-by-side with neither able to gain an advantage or cut into Stefanski’s seemingly solid lead.
Another caution slowed the race on lap 11 as Rick Dempsey, who was trying to progress forward on the top side, went a little too high in the marbles and got sucked into the turn three wall. When the green lights came back on, Carlson found the speed he needed to outrace Stefanski into turn one to grab the top spot.
Just before the halfway point the top-five of Carlson, Stefanski, Marin, Nick Stone and Tom Kuck ran bumper-to-bumper around the Syracuse Mile. Just when this battle was heating up, Super DIRT Week rookies Bill Woodard and David Papineau got collected up into the turn three wall.
On lap17 Stefanski, who was on Carlson’s bumper, suddenly swung to the high side of Carlson trying to grab the lead back going into turn one. The move was unsuccessful and Stefanski settled back in behind Carlson. The next lap Stefanski tried the same move again going down the front straight, although this time an alert Marin who was sitting in third watching the battle for the lead, went to the inside of Stefanski to take over second.
The yellow flew for the last time for debris on lap 21 to set up a four-lap shootout to the finish. Carlson, Marin Stefanski, Stone and Sean Corr were all within striking distance of the win to keep the crowd on edge over the final laps.
On the final restart Carlson and Marin were able to open a small distance over the rest of the top-five, setting up their own race for the mile win. Marin would start to pull even with Carlson and each time Carlson had just enough speed to hold back every challenge. On the final lap coming out of turn four Marin gave it one last shot to the high side but at the finish but came up a 3/4 car-length shy.
Carlson finally got his Syracuse victory after coming close before. Marin settled for second ahead of Stefanski, Camping World race rookie Nick Stone and Sean Corr to complete the top-five.

Syracuse, NY — Stefanski & Carlson Top BNC 25 Pro Stock Championship Qualifiers
Syracuse, NY— October 6, 2007 — By Tom Skibinski, DIRTcar Racing NorthEast PR Director
For the second time in the past four years, overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock points leader Pete Stefanski earned the pole position start for the Pro Stock Championship during Super DIRT Week. Only time will tell if it will be enough to score his first victory at the New York State Fairgrounds, where he placed second last autumn in his only previous trip to the podium.
Stefanski collected the $500 Pole Award presented by Terrell’s Potato Chips. Connecticut invader Don Carlson was second quickest to win the $250 prize also posted by Terrell’s in support of DIRTcar racing NorthEast’s top full-fender touring division.
Stefanski bettered 47 cars under the clocks, earning the pole starting position for the 25-Lap BNC Motorsports Pro Stock Championship with a time of 36.852 seconds (97.688 mph) behind the wheel of his San-Ter Sewing-PJ Niagara Falls Travel #2 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Carlson’s own Chevy MC is backed by Benzinger Wine and Leary Construction.
Among the first dozen cars to take time in the first of three groupings, Stefanski set fast time early in the afternoon and watched as his nearest challenges fell by the wayside one by one. Carlson came out at the beginning of group two before circling the Syracuse Mile with the second fastest time of the day bettering those of top touring contenders Clayton Benedict, Joey Ladouceur, Allen Peters and defending BNC Champion Louie Jackson.
The top-24 drivers are now locked into the starting grid for Sunday’s BNC Motorspotrs Pro Stock Championship event. Following the fast times posted by Stefanski and Carlson to round out the top six drivers were Capital District chauffeurs Nick Stone and Rick Dempsey, Jackson and inaugural Super DIRT Week (1997) winner Kenny Martin.
Line-ups for a pair of ‘Last Chance Race’ qualifiers have been set with 25 drivers looking to secure a spot on Sunday’s starting grid, with the eventual winner taking home the first-place check of $2,000.

Fulton, NY — September 28, 2007 – By Tom Skibinski, DIRTcar Racing NorthEast PR Director
The Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Series event held annually at Fulton Speedway is traditionally referred to as the Victoria Championship. Fulton’s full-fender season-finale has quickly evolved into the Pete Stefanski Benefit as the reigning overall Mr. DIRTcar points champion captured his third straight title race victory at the Route 57 raceway as the 22nd Victoria 200 Weekend kicked off on Friday night.
“Once the Sportsman ran it in, the track was just awesome tonight,” said Stefanski, as he stretched the points lead following his third Series win in six races run in 2007. Maybe more impressive for the Wheatfield, N.Y. driver was his sixth top-five finish in the past seven Victoria Championships, including his fourth trip to victory lane since 2001. “I owe a lot to my sponsors and to Allen and PJ Peters for giving me the motor. Its been a great year and hopefully it will get even better in the coming weeks.”
Chasing flag-to-flag leader Stefanski in the 30-lap title run were Canadian Dave Bissonnette, Fulton regulars Jason Parkhurst and Billy Clark Jr., and Stefanski’s teammate Allen Peters, himself a two-time Series race winner in ’07.
Intermittent rainfall forced track officials to delay Friday’s show for 1-1/2 hours following qualifying heats, with 38 Pro Stocks signing in for round number six in the eight-race tour. Stefanski won the first of four preliminary races to earn the pole-position start which finally took the initial green flag just after midnight. Twenty-five minutes later Stefanski was celebrating the $1,200 triumph which marked his 14th career Mr. DIRTcar Championship race victory, putting him behind only Jipp Ortiz on the all-time tour win list.
“My biggest concern tonight was with the traffic going three and four-wide in front of me,” noted Stefanski, after posting his DIRTcar NorthEast best 17th feature win of the season, his fourth coming at the 3/8-mile high-banked Fulton oval. “Once ahead my only worry was with the cars in front of me. I backed out a little at the end, I just wanted to make sure I finished, that was the only way to win.”
While Stefanski was shadowed early by “Bulldog” Bissonnette, the no. 2 Sunrise Racing-MarJon School of Beauty-San Ter Sewing Chevrolet Monte Carlo had little trouble keeping the 32-car starting field at bay the second half of the race. Four caution periods slowed the feature, with the final 22 laps run straight through under green on the ultra-smooth racing surface.
Patrick Hobbs lost a wheel in turn two to force out the first yellow flag on lap four, with Mike Martin and Adam Hunt getting caught up in the mishap. Picking up the back-up no. 27 ride of Louie Jackson to fall in 31st-place on the starting grid, Ontario, Canada traveler Roch Aubin looped all alone to incur the second caution two laps later. At the end of the ensuing lap six restart, P.J. Peters blew a right rear tire entering turn four to send his mount sideways with the field scrambling to avoid serious contact. ’06 DIRTcar Rookie of the Year Dion Oakes instigated the final slowdown when his full-body ride veered wide between turns one and two, with Dean Charbonneau and Shawn Frost tangling on the back chute in the aftermath.
Back under green Stefanski had little trouble opening up a comfortable advantage while Bissonnette and Parkhurst ran tight the remainder of the way in his rear-view. While Stefanski clung to the inside lane, his closest pursuers diced two-wide in traffic with Parkhurst taking over the runner-up position on lap 24. However, with just two laps to go, Parkhurst got boxed in behind lapped cars and Bissonnette was quick to regain second and hold on for the final circuits.
Denis Gauvreau, Chris Mackey, Scott Gribben, and rallying PJ Peters and Aubin rounded out the top-10 with Jack Terrell finishing 14th as the last to be scored on the lead lap.
Stefanski continues to pace the points standings through the initial six Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Series races. The next stop on the 2007 tour comes during Super DIRT Week as teams contend for top honors in the BNC Motorsports 25 on Sunday, October 7.
