Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Jiffy 50 at Cornwall (Aug 31st)
Posted by chet on Tuesday, September 02 @ 01:04:37 EDT (67 reads) |
|
Western New York touring star Pete Stefanski continued his reign on Canadian soil, capturing his third straight Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Championship Series victory on Sunday in the Jiffy Auto Services 50 at Cornwall Motor Speedway.
Dion Oakes took the lead in the Cornwall full-fender finale when the first caution came out on lap 2. Joey Ladouceur grabbed the top spot when caution came on the next lap with Stéphane Lebrun having troubles in turn 4.
Ladouceur had company with Oakes on the restart and Pete Stefanski now in third when caution came out on lap 6 for Bruno Cyr. With Ladouceur leading the way for the next 5 laps Mike Martin and Ricky Thompson got together in the front stretch on lap 11.
Although Ladouceur had a strong start, Stefanski used the outside lane to take second from Oakes on lap 14. PJ Peters was also strong on the outside as he was now fourth while Louie Jackson was lready in eighth after starting from the 25th spot.
Jackson moved in to a battle for fifth with Travis Back through 22 laps and Roch Aubin brought a yellow as he stopped in turn 2. Stefanski got a good jump to take the lead but Ladouceur was still there as the leaders got at the halfway point with PJ Peters in third, Oakes and Gauvreau completing the top 5.
A multi-car accident occurred in turn 2 on lap 27 although Ladouceur was back in the lead on the restart with Denis Gauvreau and PJ Peters going at it for third. Jackson seemed pretty strong on the outside as he took 2 spots and was now third. Stefanski was making a charge on Ladouceur and took the lead from the bottom lane on lap 35.
Jackson was trying hard and lost control of his car and Gauvreau got caught in the action and brought out the caution on lap 39. Gauvreau was running in the top-5 and was second in the series points race behind Stefanski.
On the restart, Stefanski was still in the lead with Ladouceur and PJ Peters following him. Stefanski was running the bottom of the speedway with less than 3 laps to go. Ladouceur was on the bumper of the leader but Stefanski was able to resist to win the 50-lap feature ahead of Joey Ladouceur with PJ Peters, Dion Oakes and Daniel Leduc rounding out the top-5.
“The track was slippery but the car was good tonight,’’ said a happy Stefanski, following his third straight tour win which ties him with Jipp Ortiz atop the all-time list with 17 career extra-distance victories. Stefanski continues to hold a comfortable lead in the series points but still added “We have to take one race at a time, we have a 100-lap event coming up and anything can happen.”
Stefanski, Allen Peters and Oakes won the three heat race qualifiers while Ladouceur had the best time in Pro Stock time trials with a time of 14.986 seconds for a speed of 60.056mph.
The 2008 Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Series returns to Canada in just one more week when Autodrome Edelweiss hosts the Northeast’s top traveling teams in the special 100-lap feature event next Friday, September 5 with $1,500 to win and over $7,000 in prize money.

Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Championship Series at Autodrome Drummond
Posted by chet on Tuesday, August 26 @ 17:46:59 EDT (60 reads) |
|
Drummondville, QUE — August 23, 2008 – By Tom Skibinski, DIRTcar Racing NorthEast PR Director
DIRTcar Racing NorthEast’s winningest UMP Pro Stock driver Pete Stefanski added another victory to his growing list after capturing the Mr. DIRTcar Championship Series Coca-Cola 50 at Autodrome Drummond on Saturday.
Stefanski’s second straight tour triumph extended his points lead over Frenchman Denis Gauvreau, New Englander Don Carlson and Akwesasne native P.J. Peters, with each also placing second through fourth in the feature. Louie Jackson filled out the final front-five on Saturday.
“The track was great, the facility is great, you couldn’t ask for much more from 50 laps for us,” beamed Stefanski, 38, following his 16th career Mr. DIRTcar Championship Series victory that pulls him to within one of career leader Jipp Ortiz. Stefanski has now taken 74 checkered flags to rank nearly 20 wins ahead of runner-up Ortiz, who closed out his full-fender career with 56 feature wins.
A handful of caution periods slowed the pace early on with Peters and track regular Normand Lemire swapping the lead before Gauvreau took charge on lap four. Stefanski began third on the 23-car starting grid and never dropped beyond fourth-place before getting on track with 20 laps to go aboard his Sunrise Racing no. 2 San Ter Sewing-Sunrise II Sport Fishing-PJ NFB Auto Sales Chevrolet Monte Carlo entry.
With the eighth and final yellow flag flying on lap 28, Stefanski took advantage of the ensuing green flag conditions methodically working his way to the front as the circuits clicked off. The Wheatfield, New York veteran grabbed third from Peters on lap 34, ducked under runner-up Jackson the next time around and chased down Gauvreau to forge the final change by inches to close out lap 39.
“We were just trying to be a little patient knowing its 50 laps,” remarked Stefanski, who has now won tour events at 10 different tracks around the DIRTcar NE circuit. “We felt better as the greens went, yet we were a little slow when they first came out.”
“We were just hoping the car would come in at the end and it did for us really good. We’re leading the points right now but we come in to each race one at a time because its not hard (to get caught). You have a couple bad finishes with the top runners like Denis, Don and Joey (Ladouceur) and they’re there just waiting to jump on it. They have a couple good ones and we have a bad one and we’re right out of it. So we take it one race at a time right now,” Stefanski said.
Leading for nearly three-quarters of the race, runner-up Gauvreau was still content with a solid run in front of the partisan crowd which kept him within reach of Stefanski through four of 12 point races.
“We’re happy to finish second, that’s where we are in the points,” said Gauvreau, still in search of his first series win of the season despite the Gatineau, Quebec driver registering three top-five tallies aboard the Gauvreau Top Soil no. 72 Micheline Richard Royal LePage/Chevy Monte Carlo ride to keep him in the hunt for the overall title. “We just have to keep up our good finishes, the rest will take care of itself I’m sure.”
Racking up his second top-three finish of 2008 on tour, Carlson was even more satisfied filling in the show position despite steering an untested ride around the racy 4/10-mile clay oval.
“We brought out a brand new car with us today, weren’t too sure how it was going to go but we got it going pretty good,” beamed Carlson, winner of the Super DIRT Week Pro Stock main last October on the Syracuse Mile. “The track was kind of slick but pretty fast, it was a good race. It was still nerve-racking to get a set-up and wonder if its going to be alright. We had our fingers crossed all night,” admitted Carlson, who debuted a new orange Dodge Charger carrying sponsorship from Benziger Winery-Kleer on the EMS machine.
For the first time this year in Pro Stock series competition, time trials were run with heat race line-ups determined by clockings in each three-lap session. Being the inaugural event at Drummond, Joey Ladouceur established a new single-lap Pro Stock mark touring the tacky 4/10-miler in a time of 19.995 sec. (72.018 mph). Unfortunately for the second-generation driver from Alexandria, Ontario, after starting ninth Ladouceur suffered a broken right front wheel to take him in and out of the pits early before retiring for good with just 15 laps complete.
The 2008 Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Series returns to Canada in just one more week when Cornwall Motor Speedway hosts the Northeast’s top traveling teams in the
Jiffy Auto Service 50 on Sunday, August 31.
SKIDMARKS
A solid field of 25 UMP Pro Stock entries, including 17 of the top-20 in points, signed in with those same 17 all in competition at Genesee Speedway on Aug 2. 2004 Mr. DIRTcar Champion Joey Ladouceur already is fielding phone calls from numerous drivers looking to move into the UMP Pro Stock ranks after watching the success achieved so far at Drummond. Only time will tell if sister speedway Autodrome Granby follows suit and sanctions the UMP Pro Stocks in 2009.
The inaugural Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Championship Series event at Autodrome Drummond was the second tour stop of 2008 conducted at the popular Quebec oval, coming on the heels of the annual Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series show for Big-Block Modifieds run on July 12. Its time for the 358-Modifieds to take center stage at Drummond for the biggest event in track history when Small-Block stars on both sides of the border chase a $15,000 top-prize in 150-laps of open-wheel competition on Saturday, September 13.

Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Championship Series at Genesee Speedway
Posted by chet on Sunday, August 03 @ 20:55:44 EDT (65 reads) |
|
Batavia, NY — August 2, 2008 – By Tom Skibinski, DIRTcar Racing NorthEast PR Director
Round three of the Hoosier Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Championship Series at Genesee Speedway came down to a regular Saturday night shootout between track point leaders Pete Stefanski and Mike Martin. But on this night it was anything but normal as the second and final lead change came with the checkered flag in hand and the leaders trading paint all the way home in the extended 35-lap full-fender finale.
Just like it started, Stefanski led the last trip around ---although Martin paced every lap in between--- in dramatic fashion to cop the 35-lap Jack Veach Memorial presented by the American Cancer Society, with Martin clinging to second only a few feet behind the winning Sunrise Racing no. 2 San Ter Sewing-Sunrise II Sport Fishing-PJ NFB Auto Sales Chevrolet Monte Carlo entry.
“Mike’s been fast all year and he’s definitely a guy to beat here,” said Stefanski, who turns 38 on Tuesday, following his last lap heroics that netted the Wheatfield, New York driver the $1,000 top prize and increased his lead further in the overall Mr. DIRTcar standings through three of 12 races. “We were better on the green flag laps, we kept getting our nose in there.”
“When you’re gonna leave the door open and kinda come down, there’s a little bit of rubbing but I think I got him on that last corner. I didn’t really move him out of the way too much. I could’ve moved him up sooner but we were consistent with the green laps and just kept working on him,” remarked Stefanski, after posting his first series win of the season to push his career total to 15 and leave him second on the all-time list behind only three-time Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Champion Jipp Ortiz with 17 career tour triumphs.
Steering a former Stefanski ride to finish third was Steve Lewis in owner Brett Martin’s (Mike’s son) no. 2m machine, while Genesee standout Eric Greenlief and Frenchman Denis Gauvreau filled out the final front-five.
Running one-two on the Genesee points chart entering the final month of their title run at the Batavia, New York oval, heat winner Stefanski and Martin sandwiched Canadian invader Gauvreau in the second of three qualifying races. The pre-race draw offered little relief for the top tour travelers as the hometrack heroes selected the top two spots to head the 23-car starting grid.
While Stefanski jumped out early from his pole-position start, Martin bolted past on the second circuit to leave his closest pursuer feeding on the bottom the remainder of the way. With eight caution periods slowing the pace of the race, Martin wavered only once, and that was all the two-time reigning Mr. DIRTcar points king needed to duck under in turn one on the last circuit and pull away for a scant half car-length victory in the closest series race of the season in any division.
“Mike’s a good competitor and I’m sure we’ll be doing this for the rest of the series races,” noted Stefanski, who remains in search of an unprecedented third consecutive Mr. DIRTcar points crown, a feat that no driver in any class has ever pulled off since the nationally recognized organization was established in 1976. “The track was in pretty decent shape tonight, a little bumpy, but you could race on it if you were patient.”
“Some of the guys behind having a bad night definitely helps because we’re gonna have one sometime too, we just take the series races one at a time. What you get is what you get, the end result is gonna be it no matter how hard you try point racing. To come out with a win, our first series race of the season, it certainly helps with momentum. It means even more to me and my family winning on Jack Veach night, we all wish he was still here,” added Stefanski, who has won three of the past four series races at Genesee, including the last one staged in 2006.
As content as Stefanski was with his fifth victory of the season at Genesee, Martin was as disappointed after leading all but two times around in his potent red no. 99 BDK Construction-Able Auto Insurance-Basket Factory/Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
“We had a really good car tonight, just got lifted off the track a little bit there at the end but that’s racing I guess,” figured a dejected Martin, who already captured three feature wins this year at Genesee, yet was geared up for his first career victory in DIRTcar Racing NorthEast’s premier full-fender division right up until the last lap miscue. “The track was real choppy so I just tried to stay on the bottom and take it easy through the corners.”
“We tried ….. we had a good car, a fast one, and passed (Pete) on the top early in the race so we definitely thought we had a car that could win tonight. We’re a little disappointed with the outcome. He didn’t turn me around so I guess I can appreciate the fact that that didn’t happen. Pete’s a good racer, he could’ve taken me out and he didn’t. We were running pretty hard but the track was so choppy, we were just bouncing around all over the place and it was hard to get a hold of the track. We did the best we could, we came out of here with second and with all these top quality drivers we shouldn’t be ashamed of our run tonight,” Martin said.
While Martin and Stefanski led the Pro Stock parade most of the way, tour invader Louie Jackson tried his best to break up their party. The ’06 Syracuse Super DIRT Week winner and ’08 tour opener victor at Can-Am Motorsports Park charged from ninth to third after just a handful of circuits, with the Holley Hard Luck award recipient eventually blasting past Stefanski and setting his sights on Martin until a ball joint failed on lap 28 sent Jackson pitside for the remainder of the night.
Claiming two wins this season at Genesee and winner of round two of the ’08 Mr. DIRTcar Championship trail at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park on July 3, Don Barnes was never a factor as a pair of broken front shocks kept him exactly where he started (7th) and solidified his fifth-place rank in the current standings.
Traveling teams return to competition in the 2008 Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Series, with Autodrome Drummond hosting its first ever tour event on Saturday, August 23.

Barnes Captures Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Series Holiday Show At Rolling Wheels Race
Posted by chet on Saturday, July 05 @ 01:22:04 EDT (120 reads) |

Elbridge, NY – July 3, 2008 – By Joe Johnson, DIRTcar Racing NorthEast Series Correspondent
Tour traveler Don Barnes from Gasport , New York captured his first career Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Championship Series win at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park on Thursday evening. The race was the second in the 2008 Series.
Former Pro Stock Series champion Joey Ladouceur and Dick Parkhurst brought the 26-car field down to starter Matt Burdick’s green flag with Parkhurst grabbing the early lead. Afternoon showers left the track heavy and rough which would make passing difficult.
Ladouceur soon found out that the infield was still quite wet when Parkhurst crowded him on the front stretch as the pair battled for the lead. Ladouceur spun and collected a couple of cars and Parkhurst was sent to the rear of the field.
On the ensuing restart, Barnes inherited the lead with Billy Woodward Jr., Roch Aubin, Don Carlson and Bill Pascual rounding out the front-five. Barnes moved out to a good advantage while Carlson charged into second in his number 26. The Lebanon Valley regular soon began to put pressure on Barnes for the top spot but Steve Johnston brought out the second yellow flag of the race with a spin in turn four. Series points leader Louie Jackson ---by virtue of his opening day win at Can-Am--- headed pitside during the caution period and did not return, the victim of mechanical problems.
When racing resumed Barnes led Carlson, Woodward, Aubin and Pascual but quickly charging from the back was the 92.1 of Ladouceur as he moved back into ninth by lap four, then by lap seven was into sixth. Defending Mr. DIRTcar Champion Pete Stefanski was also on the move after problems in his heat forced him to start at the back and a quick trip to the pits put him back there yet again during the race.
The top two began to pull away with Carlson all over the Barnes’ no. 28 machine but was unable to find a way by. Fonda Speedway regular Dean Charbonneau brought out the yellow on lap nine after contact with Woodward in the 49. Charbonneau tried to keep going to negate the yellow but got stuck in the mud, and the no. 49 car was subsequently put to the rear of the field where he was none too happy.
On the restart Pascual made a move for third while Ladouceur sped into fifth with the no. 2 of Stefanski not far behind. Hogansburg’s Ricky Thompson brought out the yellow on lap 11 after spinning and making contact with the inside wall in turn four and his no. 37 mountwas towed to the infield, done for the evening.
Ladouceur continued his charge to the front on the restart moving into fourth, while Stefanski jumped into seventh at the same instance. The top-three ran right together for several laps until Woodward spun the 49 on the outside of turn two on lap 17.
Following the restart, a wild battle ensued between the 92.1 of Ladouceur, Stefanski in the 2 and the 73 of PJ Peters, with the three Pro Stock veterans trading fourth, fifth and sixth several times a lap. Eventually Stefanski prevailed and set sail after Pascual for third. He reached Pascual on lap 23 and hit him hard in turn three to get the spot.
Charbonneau brought out one more yellow on lap 24 setting up a one lap dash to the finish. Barnes held off Carlson for the win with Stefanski, Pascual and Peters rounding out the top-five. Ladouceur settled for sixth but put on a great show.

The Pro Stocks will also see the return of the ever popular Super DIRTcar Series Trail event. In a yet to be announced date, Genesee Hot Shoes Pete Stefanski and Don Barnes will do battle with North Country Invaders Louie Jackson and Allen Peters. Genesee officials are working on a mid summer date that should be coming out soon.
In a popular move, DIRTcar officials decided to freeze the Pro Stock rules for 2008. The only change will be with the Holley 4777 HP carburetor, to remain consistent with all of the other DIRTcar classes. “With car counts a concern at all tracks, freezing the rules in the Pro Stocks seemed to be the best option available for DIRTcar” commented Genesee Promoter Mike Lauterborn. “Our Pro Stock car counts were going up at the end of 2007, and we now have some momentum for the 2008 season”.

Middletown, NY — October 21, 2007 – By Tom Skibinski, DIRTcar Racing NorthEast PR Director
The Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Series returned to Orange County Fair Speedway and it was Eric Marin taking advantage of home turf to capture his first career tour triumph to close out the full-fender portion of the 46th Annual Eastern States Weekend on Sunday afternoon.
Sixth-place starter Marin survived a half-dozen yellow flags to grab the lead on lap 10 and pulled away from Rob Rowe for six car-length lead to take top honors in the Leader Carpet Pro Stock Championship. Series standout Louie Jackson finished third ahead of early race leaders Robbie Speed and Mike Dutka.
Pete Stefanski was involved in a pair of mishaps during the early stages yet a 26th-place tally on the final scoresheet was good enough to claim a second straight overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock title.
